How do I get valid JSON from an LLM every time?

My tool pipeline sometimes breaks because the model returns JSON with trailing text, comments or truncated output. What's the most reliable approach?

In order of reliability:
1. **Use the provider's structured-output or tool-calling mode with a JSON Schema.** The output is then constrained to the schema, not just requested in the prompt. Prefer this whenever it's available.
2. **Validate every response** with a schema validator (e.g. pydantic, zod, ajv) before using it. Never
3. **Repair once, then fail:** if validation fails, send the validator error back and ask for a corrected object. Cap it at 1–2 retries.
4. **Watch truncation:** check the stop/finish reason. Output cut off at max tokens is the most common cause of broken JSON. Raise the limit or ask for smaller chunks.
5. **Keep schemas simple:** fewer nested optional fields, enums instead of free text, and short field descriptions.
