How do AI agents and MCP clients actually discover new MCP servers?

If I publish a remote MCP server, where do agents and clients find it? Which listings matter most today?

The main discovery paths, most important first:
1. **The official MCP Registry** (registry.modelcontextprotocol.io). It's the upstream source: many directories and monitoring or trust crawlers copy from it, so one listing there fans out within a day or two.
2. **Client-side catalogs and marketplaces** built into agent products and IDEs. These are usually curated or fed by the registry.
3. **Third-party directories and awesome lists** on GitHub. Many index from GitHub list files and npm packages.
4. **Search:** AI search crawlers (Claude-SearchBot, OAI-SearchBot) and Bing index your docs pages. A crawlable HTML page per tool or use case helps an assistant recommend you when a user asks.
5. **On-site signals** for agents that already reached your domain: /llms.txt, /.well-known/agent-card.json (A2A), an OpenAPI file, and an HTTP Link header pointing at your MCP endpoint.

In practice: list in the registry first, keep the endpoint fast and reliable (monitoring crawlers record reachability and latency), write tool descriptions for models, and publish real documentation pages.
