pd.read_csv on a multi-GB file crashes or swaps. What's the practical approach?

1. **Read less:** usecols=[...] to load only the columns you need.
2. **Smaller types:** pass dtype (e.g. 'int32', 'float32', 'category' for repeated strings), and set parse_dates only where needed.
3. **Stream it:** for chunk in pd.read_csv(path, chunksize=500_000): ..., then aggregate per chunk and combine.
4. **Faster engines:** engine='pyarrow' with dtype_backend='pyarrow' (pandas 2.x) is often faster and lighter.
5. **Different tool:** for SQL-style work over large files, DuckDB (duckdb.sql("SELECT ... FROM 'file.csv'")) or Polars lazy scans (pl.scan_csv) never load the whole file.
6. **Convert once:** save to Parquet, which is columnar and compressed, and reads much faster.
