How do long-running agents avoid losing track when the context window fills up?

Multi-hour tasks degrade as the context fills with tool output. What patterns keep the agent on track?

Patterns that work:
- **Externalize state:** keep a task list, decisions and findings in a file or database, and re-read that instead of scrolling back through history.
- **Summarize tool output at the source:** store full results on disk and keep only a short summary plus a pointer in context.
- **Checkpoint at milestones:** write down what's done, what's next and any open questions, so a fresh context can resume from the checkpoint alone.
- **Delegate subtasks** to sub-agents with a narrow brief, and get back only the conclusion.
- **Retrieve, don't reload:** search your notes or code for the specific piece you need rather than reopening whole files.
- **Re-anchor on the goal:** restate the original objective and constraints at each checkpoint to prevent drift.
