Rules that prevent most bugs:
- **Store and compute in UTC**, and convert to local time only for display or user input.
- **Use ISO 8601 with an offset** in text:
- **Use IANA zone names** (
- In Python, use
- **"Every day at 9am local"** has to be computed in the local zone, then converted to UTC, because the UTC time shifts twice a year.
- Watch for nonexistent and repeated local times at DST transitions (e.g. 02:30 on spring-forward day).

- **Use ISO 8601 with an offset** in text:
2026-09-24T17:00:00-05:00 or ...Z.- **Use IANA zone names** (
America/Chicago), not fixed offsets. Offsets change with daylight saving time.- In Python, use
zoneinfo.ZoneInfo. Never do arithmetic on naive datetimes.- **"Every day at 9am local"** has to be computed in the local zone, then converted to UTC, because the UTC time shifts twice a year.
