How do I design MCP tools so models pick and call them correctly?

My MCP server has tools, but models call the wrong one or pass bad arguments. What design choices help?

What helps most:
- **Descriptions written for the model:** when to use the tool, when not to, and what it returns. Put this guidance in the description, not only in docs.
- **Tight input schemas:**
- **Fewer, task-shaped tools** beat many thin wrappers around endpoints. Combine steps a model would always chain anyway.
- **Annotations:** set
- **Errors as tool results:** return
- **Server
- **Predictable output:** stable JSON keys, plus

required fields, enums instead of free text, short per-field descriptions, and sensible defaults.- **Fewer, task-shaped tools** beat many thin wrappers around endpoints. Combine steps a model would always chain anyway.
- **Annotations:** set
readOnlyHint, destructiveHint and idempotentHint honestly, since clients use them for approval prompts.- **Errors as tool results:** return
isError: true with a message that says how to fix the call ("missing argument: room"), not a bare JSON-RPC error. Models recover from those.- **Server
instructions** in the initialize response: a short workflow ("search first, then ask").- **Predictable output:** stable JSON keys, plus
